Horseracing is one of the world's most oldest sports. The first known formal mounted horse races took place in ancient Greece. In 1174, the first public racecourse built since Roman times, was constructed in London. It was called Smithfield Track. In London horseracing is still known as "The Sport of Kings." In 1665 the first racetrack in North America was built on Long Island. Interest in horseracing continued in the 19th century, and in 1984 the Jockey Club an American Organization (incorporated in NYC) was formed to encourage the breeding of Thoroughbred horses and the maintence of high ethical standereds in horse racing. The club exerted a strong, constructive influence on racing and breeding standards throughout the U.S. It developed a basis of American racing procedure and conduct and maintained the bureau of registry for all American Thoroughbreds
